F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

What is a day without FRIENDS? No, I do not mean my real friends. I am speaking of the super-hit American sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S that drove not just USA, but the entire world crazy. There are 2 things I have to do everyday in order to have a sense of fulfillment: First is to read the newspaper, early morning, sipping tea, hearing the birds chirping in the morning…this really starts my day on a good note. And the 2nd thing is to watch atleast 1 episode of FRIENDS, in the evening or night, after I have had a tiring day in office and all the horrendous commuting I do. My mom never really understands this habitual practice, but I am so used to FRIENDS, that I just don’t feel like going off to sleep unless I complete this ritual : ).
So what is it that makes FRIENDS so dear to me? Is it the cast, the script, the story-line, the direction, the humor? The answer is Everything. I love just everything about this sitcom. It is amazing that the crew could maintain the quality undaunted for 10 seasons. That’s not an easy job. Keeping the audience forever happy is so difficult and yet somehow they have almost nearly managed to do so. And the best part is that they have accomplished this not just on a national, but on a global scale.
So who do I love the most? Chandler Bing (Mathew Perry) ofcourse. He is so sarcastic, funny and also loving and caring at the same time. His comic timing is just apt. It’s impossible to imagine FRIENDS without Chandler Bing. Some of my favorite episodes revolving around Chandler are the ones where he has to travel to Yemen to get rid of Janice; where he has to sit in a box to appease Joey; where he proposes to Monica and where they mercilessly grill an unsuspecting surrogate father…LOL…Chandler Bing rocks!!!
You cannot possibly ignore Monica Geller-Bing (Courtney Cox) when you speak of Chandler. I wish I could take tips from her on planning, organizing, cooking and ofcourse nagging : ). I heard that earlier, they were thinking of casting Courtney as Rachel Green, but naaaaaaaahhhh that would have been such a misfit. Courtney surely seems to be tailor-made for Monica. Together with Chandler, they make a wonderful couple who are poles apart, but so made for each other. I truly envy their relationship.
Now that we spoke of Chandler and Monica, you cannot forget Chandler’s ex-room mate and unofficially adopted Best Friend Joey Tribbiani (Matt le Blanc). “How you doinnnnnnnnnnn?” summarizes everything about Joey. A ladies’ Man, total flirt, extremely childish, cutely stupid, Joey is so adorable and hot at the same time. After all it’s not so easy to woo a girl, with just a “How you doinnnnnnnnnn?”. Most girls would answer with an “I am Fine” if some other guy were to try it.
So would Rachel Green (Jennifer Anniston) and Joey make a good pair? Noooo. I feel she and Ross are perfect for each other. Rachel is a style icon. I wish I could ape her entire wardrobe and I pray to God that atleast some day in my life I would have beautiful, lustrous hair like her. It’s cute and romantic to see how her relationship with Ross blossoms, breaks and then keeps on going high and low all the time. And I do agree with her…Ross and she were not ON A BREAKKKKKKKKKKKKKK : ).
Break? Break-ups? Divorces? Who do you think of when you hear this word? Ross Geller (David Schwimmer)..hehehe. Poor guy. It’s sad to see this intellectual, sensitive and geeky Paleontologist falling for the wrong gal everytime, getting married to her and then ending up in a divorce. C’mon guys, Ross Geller definitely deserves better, which is what he gets in the end finally…he gets Rachel. I was so happy when they finally got back together. Somehow the idea of Rachel and Joey was not so appealing.
Ok! I just saw a cat ..and guess what I started to hum? “Smelly Cat, smellllllyyyyy cat….what are they feeding you? Smelly Cat, Smellllyyyyyy cat, it’s not your fault”. Hehehehee. God! Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) is really so wonderfully weird (as complimented truly by Mike Hannigan). She has had a miserable childhood, but she is always so looking forward to life. She is totally crazy. After all who would want to have rat babies as pets? Who would want to be a singer with such an awful voice? Or who would think that their moms had been reincarnated as a cat? Hehe…Phoebe Buffay and her unique antics makes her stand out among the rest.
It’s not just the main cast, but everyone else has been so rightly fitted into the right role. Adorable and Rachel’s secret admirer – Gunther, “Ohhhh myyyyyyyy Goddddddddd” - Janice, “Ross was a medical wonder” – Judy and Jack, Frank and Alice, Mona, Richard, Joey’s agent – Estelle, Joey's paper-eating buddy…it’s hard to imagine FRIENDS without all these characters as well.

Some of my favorite dialogues have been:

Janice: Ohhh Myyy Gawwwdddddd. It’s a small world.
Chandler: And yet I never run into Beyonce.

Phoebe: Hey guys I just realized, poker is joker with a P.
Chandler: And Coincidence is Joeincidence with a J.

Ross: We were on a Breakkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!
I take Rachael…uummm Emily…Emily…Emily….I take Emily……..

Joey: Joey doesn't shareeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee food.

Phoebe: Oh i wish i could help you, except that i don't want to.

Folks..if you haven’t laughed on reading and remembering these dialogues, then I suggest you watch FRIENDS carefully..very carefully…and you will know what I mean…and you will know why I am such an ardent fan of the F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Together, they all, create and portray life as it usually is, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sometimes tragic, sometimes hilarious and together they all make you love them and remember them always, with a smile on your face.
